The Importance of Cognitive Games For Your Memory in the Elderly
Brains Vs. Computers
The human brain is not designed like a computer, and should not be treated like one.
In the case of computers, silicone chips can be inserted, and this is enough to give a computer a great deal more memory capacity.
Unfortunately for many, however, the human brain does not function in the same capacity. Much like the human body, the human brain also takes exercise before it begins to function at its highest level.
Adding a Memory Chip to the Human Brain
As was discussed, we add memory to the human brain differently than we do to a computer. In order to increase the brain’s capacity, we need to exercise it on a regular basis.
Ideally, we should all do brain exercises every day. This will lead to the fortunate effect of being able to remember information without struggling and becoming frustrated.
There are many memory games to improve your memory.
Examples of Brain Workouts
These are some examples games you can use to maintain memory capacity:
Word Scramble
Crossword Puzzle
Sudoku
Most of the time there are fun puzzles included in the local newspaper; don’t just gloss over them, do them!
You could also focus on reading more, or going to a local lecture. If there is a community college near you, take a class. If there are volunteer organizations in your area, volunteer.
If you are the sort of person who enjoys watching game shows, try to answer the questions that get asked. Try to “Solve the puzzle” before the host gives away the answer on Wheel of Fortune, for instance.
In the Car
If you use a GPS unit in your car, try instead to immediately memorize the route that it says to take (rather than relying on it for turn-by-turn instructions).
Next time you go to the same place, try to find it without the GPS’ help.
Take on New Activities
It’s not too late to learn the language that you’ve always wanted to, or pick up the instrument you never got around to playing. Learning a new language or instrument is a great way to exercise your brain.
Writing about the new experiences is also a great way to keep your brain engaged.
Take a trip to the local hobby store. If building a model train strikes you as interesting, then do it. Working out the intricate details, and following the instructions is another effective method of practicing concentration.
Concentration
Constant sensory bombardment is one of the reasons that we forget as much as we do.
Tuning out all the noise we experience in daily life, and trying to focus, is a way that we can remember the more important things. Tune out that which is unimportant, and focus on what’s around you.
Creativity is The Key
Take every opportunity possible to focus on memory improvement. There are countless ways in everyday living to practice memory games.
For instance, if you find yourself at a restaurant, randomly assign strangers a number. Once you have finished a lovely dinner, glance around the restaurant, and see how many people you can still associate with their assigned color.
These are effective methods that can also make standing in line while running errands more fun and productive.
Synopsis
In short, by the time that one reaches adulthood, one’s brain has developed millions of neural pathways which assist us in processing information more quickly, handle problems we are familiar with, and undertake tasks with a minimum of mental effort.
However, by merely reusing pathways, the brain is given no incentive to continue developing new pathways, and developing. Rather than reusing these pathways, it is important that we exercise our minds, and give them the incentive to grow!
