People Still Collect Baseball Cards
Every kid from several decades ago will know what collecting baseball cards was all about? With pocket money in hand, the kid would go down to the candy store and buy a pack of gum which had an insert inside which pictured some favored player of the time. Topps baseball cards were the most popular, and still are to some extent, and even those who collected way back then still feel the excitement of finding what they are looking for today.
In fact, it is the nostalgia people feel when they talk, involve themselves in, or go in search of, these little bits of cardboard which keeps people coming back for more. The industry has grown up around the incessant need that people have to collect things and it really was at its peak in about 1990. Since then, interest has waned a bit and a lot of retailers went out of business. However, those that weathered the storm now find themselves with a niche market that is still going on no matter what critics say.
It is the whole experience of buying something in which the contents were not known that used to get kids excited around the middle of the twentieth century. These free items were given out in bubble gum packs, in tea packets in the UK and in candy bars and the like too. One had to buy the packet and rip it open to see what was inside. However, even those ones which the avid collector already had could be swapped with other fanatics to see who would be the first to make up the complete set. These days, collectors can buy one complete set in one go without going through the hit and miss game, however, one wonders if they get the same kind of kick out of it as the kids did way back when.
Fairs and conventions have also grown up around this kind of collecting so those that want to meet like-minded people merely have to go along and saturate themselves in this pop culture. Not only will there be full sets on sale, rare examples may be up for auction too and although they may not bring the prices that they used to, it is still something of an achievement to get that all important rookie. Online there are many stores which sell all kinds of sets from just about any sport that produced this kind of novelty. Some have blogs where interested parties can swap or discuss what they are looking for. Indeed, this is probably the best way to find something rare so it is well worth a try.
People also strike up great friendships online too and, if they are so inclined, they can always meet up at one of the conventions to trade one or two of these items. As with all friendships made with strangers, just take some precautions about meeting in public etc. Although we do not like to think about this aspect, strange things do happen so take care here.
