How to Handle Last Minute Hitches on Your Wedding Day
You’ve planned meticulously over the past months and years for the biggest day of your life, what can possibly go wrong? We’ve put together a guide of unexpected things that can go wrong on your wedding day with a few ideas to keep in mind just in case!
Caterers don’t turn up – Although you’d think this is extremely unlikely to happen there is of course always the possibility. The best thing in this scenario is to know where the best restaurants and takeaways are located. If all else fails dispatch a member of your wedding party to fetch extra drink s and snacks from a local pub or supermarket. In the meantime send another volunteer to to local food outlets to see what is possible in the last minute situation you find yourself in.
Car won’t start – Make sure you have a standby – any car will do that you know is reliable and will get you to the church on time. If you’re hiring a classic car then it would be wise to check if they have a fleet as if one car breaks down another can be drafted in. No matter how reliable you have been informed the car is always demand that a standby is available. It’s probably too late to consider mechanics or roadside assistance so having a backup plan is vital.
Disco/Band/Entertainment doesn’t turn up – Once again, this is an extremely unlikely scenario but one which partially happened at our own wedding. At about 9pm when the band arrived they did so without a singer. ‘Don’t worry, the singer is coming from a different location, she’ll be here in time’ was the word from the band but by 10pm when the singer didn’t show up we were getting very nervous. After all, a band is an expensive part of your big day and one which will make or break the evening. If you have a friend or family member who you know can sing then it’s worth asking them if they want their X-Factor moment! We did and it worked out ok. It’s worth contacting the band after you’ve calmed down to negotiate the level of compensation because it’s unacceptable for this to happen. If the entertainment doesn’t arrive at all then talk to your venue as they may well have DJ equipment or a local DJ willing to step in last minute.
Dress gets stained or torn – Many wedding boutiques and shops sell stain removal wipes, it’s well worth considering having a pack of these just in case. A good and obvious place to keep them is in a close friend or family members handbag. If your dress becomes torn then it’s best to plan ahead and make sure one of your bridal party has a needle and some cotton thread available. Failing that there are some adhesive substances available which work very well for a quick fix to save your blushes.
Forgot the speech – Should your mind go blank or nerves get the better of you at the very last moment, don’t panic. Remember why you’re there and what your role is. Nobody is expecting the perfect speech and a few last minute nerves show how much you care. After all, it’s not something that everyone is amazing at and public speaking is something that when combined with the emotions of the day can freeze you up. All you need to do is toast the people you’ve been assigned to toast, say a few nice words about the bridal party and then sit down and relax. Just remember that if you freeze up at the last minute and find yourself struggling for breath to relax, take a deep breath and do the basics, smile and sit down.
Hopefully none of these last minute hitches on your wedding day will happen but it’s worth considering a few of the points to be prepared for every eventuality.
