iFit was a concept introduced by one of the largest fitness equipment manufacturers today – ICON Health and Fitness. They manufacture treadmill brands like NordicTrack, Proform, Freemotion, Epic and Reebok.

ICON started putting iFit technology on some of the more popular brand names like Proform and NordicTrack. It basically started out as a way to add more specialized workouts to your treadmill. However it has since morphed into so much more.

iFit comes in several different forms today – iFit card readers built into the treadmill console and iFit LIVE (the newest form of iFit that is being put on some of the newer NordicTrack and Proform models) where you can connect your treadmill to the Internet using the WiFi in your home.

How It Works – iFit Cards:

iFit workout cards offer 8 weeks of personal trainer designed workouts (per card). Each card has a specific goal like weight loss, aerobic fitness improvement, etc.

You insert the card directly into the treadmill\’s console and the program will automatically adjust your speed and incline to fit the workout\’s goals.

The voice of a personal trainer talks to you through the speakers, guiding you through the workout.

So when you go to workout you just slip the iFit card into the treadmill console. The treadmill remembers where you left off and stars the next iFit workout.

Note however that most ICON brands will eventually be phasing out this feature and replacing it with iFit LIVE on their new models. You can still buy the iFit cards but that probably won\’t last for very long either once the iFit card readers are phased out.

How It Works – iFit LIVE:

iFit LIVE gives you even more tools than the cards. If you have wireless Internet in your home you can connect your treadmill to the Internet through the iFit module. From there you can use Google Maps and Google terrain to run or walk different trails all over the world.

You can map out your own route – or even choose a famous route like climbing Diamond Head or running through the city of Paris. You even see the landmarks as you run past on your console window.

You can also customize and download your own workout programs and workout with Jillian Michaels from \’The Biggest Loser\’ – where she coaches you through your workout.

You can also track your fitness activity and nutrition online, which can help you reach your fitness and health goals faster.

iFit LIVE was introduced last year and, as you\’d expect, became very popular very quickly. The only real complaint buyers had was that the iFit module was an extra cost. Which leads us to the latest in iFit treadmills…

Now: iFit LIVE Built-in

While you used to have to purchase an iFit module to add to your treadmill, some of the newer, higher end treadmills are now using iFit LIVE built-in. This means you don\’t have to buy an extra module and install it. It just comes with your treadmill and you don\’t have to do anything for it.

Not all models come with this option however so be sure to check the model before you buy if you want iFit LIVE built-in.

So there are some of your options with an iFit treadmill. Basically it can help you turn a boring old treadmill into a virtual reality fitness machine.
