There’s something deep inside every person that years for music. In some people it’s a more active thing that manifests itself right away, from almost the time we’re born. You’ll see kids start banging pots and pans in an effort to channel their rhythm, and some infants approach a keyboard with studied wonder, carefully plunking at the keys in a pattern rather than mashing them. It’s been said that music is the best way to share emotions, and that words are just something that get in the way.

We know this intuitively from a young age. Unfortunately, there are people who don’t take to lessons in their youth and find themselves wanting to play later in life. In both cases the answer lies in taking lessons to guide and nourish this innate desire and open up that world of music we’ve been longing for all along.

A music teacher is responsible for getting their student to play well on the instrument of their choice, but it’s more than that. Their job is to nourish their musical appetite, to make them hungrier for it by encouraging them and introducing them to music they didn’t previously know about. This includes showing them new bands, old and contemporary, and widening their perspective on the instrument to include styles they were unaware of. If you are dedicated enough and possess sufficient talent, you’ll be able to instruct yourself on the very basics of an instrument-it’ll be harder, you’ll need considerably more persistence, and the end result will likely be mediocre unless you have no small amount of talent, but you can do it.

But when you have a teacher to correct your techniques, flatten out deficiencies before they become habit, share with you the tricks of the trade that most musicians know but you wouldn’t figure out on your own, that’s when music becomes welcoming instead of an alienating world you never feel you really belong to. It can be an intimidating place, compounded because the symbols and instruments look so foreign, and when people are up on stage playing before an appreciative audience you so desire to do it yourself, but the truth is you can derive tons of satisfaction from playing music without years of training. What you need is a teacher whose job it is to keep you in line and guide you along in your journey to self-satisfaction.

More than a person who merely instructs you, a teacher becomes a mentor. You watch them play and bask in the time you have with them to ask questions about technique, how they overcame their obstacles, and whatever else. Having a human being to connect with on this level is of utter importance, because otherwise the video or computer screen shows you a robot who you can’t relate to doing the stuff you’re dreaming about. The importance of having somebody before you in flesh and blood cannot be overstated, and it will bring you success. Good luck on the road to fulfilling your inspiration.
