Five Steps To Losing Weight

Losing weight is a challenge for even the most disciplined person. It not only requires cutting calories and increasing physical activity, it requires a lifetime commitment. To experience successful weight loss, a person needs to make lifestyle changes. Otherwise, any weight loss achieved will only be temporary. The best way to lose weight is to create a plan that is customized for your lifestyle. Everyone is different and everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. If you conquer your weight loss challenge in several steps, you are more likely to achieve lifetime success.

Get to Know Yourself

Many people who are overweight have never take time to understand why they are overweight. Sometimes people just eat poorly or lack the motivation to exercise, but others have serious emotional issues surrounding food. In order to achieve successful weight loss, you need to understand what makes you tick. Take a few weeks to journal everything you eat and what makes you want to eat a particular food. This should not be a time to diet because you want a realistic idea of how you eat. Your goal is to make lifestyle changes, not just restrict calories for a few weeks. Without making any changes, write down the food you eat and how you feel. This will help you notice things that trigger overeating and recognize your weaknesses.

Start Small

Once you have a clear picture of what and why you eat, you can begin making small changes. Do not view your weight loss as a diet, but as a lifestyle change. Since you are committing to lifelong changes, you need to start small. There are probably quite a few areas in which you can make improvements. After a few days of keeping your food journal, patterns of behavior will emerge. For instance, some people find they eat an unhealthy snack every afternoon. An unhealthy afternoon snack is an easy habit to break. Have a healthy snack on hand for each day of the week so you are not tempted to hit the vending machine or reach for candy.

Find More Healthy Alternatives

In addition to behavior, your food journal will also shed light on the foods you most commonly eat. In many cases, there are healthier, lower calorie alternatives available. Replace the soda you have at lunchtime with fresh brewed iced tea. Choose leaner cuts of eat and low-fat dairy products. There are numerous ways you can alter your diet without feeling deprived.

Up Your Veggie Intake

One of the easiest ways to cut calories is to make sure your diet includes everything you need. When you consume enough servings of vegetables each day, you feel full and do not experience cravings for unhealthy foods. If you do not like the taste of vegetables, look for creative ways to get them into your diet. You can add veggies to fruit smoothies or put them in other dishes like pasta and casseroles.

Remember to Move

Exercise is a lifesaver in more ways than one. It improves heart health and reduces your risk for chronic illness. It also gives you more energy and helps you feel better. It can also help balance out the occasional food splurge. Exercise is an important part of a weight loss plan.
