Implications of Seeing a Cosmetic Dentist

When one smiles, it brightens one\’s face. Showing pretty teeth is a reason to smile. Because we are not models, we have to ensure our smiles are picture perfect by seeing a cosmetic dentist. Without the care provided, we would not appear to be perfect.

It is usually recommended that people visit the dentist every 6 months for a dental check-up. An oral examination is a basic examination where the dentist checks on the general oral health of the mouth: the teeth, the gums, and the bone structure. X-rays are taken to help assess the health of the bone structure.

Once the patient receives a clean oral check-up, the examination is over. However, if anything unusual is detected, it is the dentist\’s responsibility to inform the patient and allow him to make the best decision as to how to rectify the situation. A lot of thought will be given over the total financial outlay needed for the procedure, the need to do the procedure and the coverage available by the dental health insurance.

When any procedure is recommended out of the usual normal examination, this might mean cosmetic dentistry. It is purely the patient\’s perception as to having the procedure performed. There are several common cosmetic dental operations. There is tooth-coloring, dental veneers, white-colored fillings, mouth guards and braces which can be silver or invisible.

It is not uncommon for smokers and heavy red wine drinkers to have badly stained teeth. The nicotine tends to darken the tooth enamel and give it an ugly yellow tinge while the tannin in the red wine might appear to darken the tooth enamel giving it a dirty brown colour. If the whitening process is not a valid option, then porcelain laminates are better recommended. This is a bonded cover over the enamel which should also reduce the sensitivity of the tooth.

Another common dental procedure is fixing a cavity with tooth-colored fillings versus silver-colored fillings. The silver fillings are more traditional and stronger and will withstand the constant bite of teeth against each other. The tooth-colored fillings are strong but not as lasting as the silver ones. However, patients like to have the tooth-colored fillings fixing their cavities so that their teeth will all look naturally similar in colour.

The natural formation of teeth has grooves and tend to all look differently. Sometimes, while sleeping, a patient might suffer from grinding of the teeth. This results in the teeth being even all across the top surface. A sleep guard is usually suggested as a remedy to help with the suppression of the grinding. This should be worn while sleeping. This should be done for a few months in order for it to be effective.

Braces are also a common dental procedure. They help to straighten the teeth or help them to be properly aligned in one\’s mouth. Traditionally, braces were usually silver and very obvious once the patient smiled. With the advent of technology, there are now invisible braces which don\’t show as obviously as before. Braces are worn by patients of every age.
