Alligator Hunts – Tips For Successful Alligator Hunts
Each state has laws and guidelines as to weapon, permits, licensing and so forth for Alligator Hunts in their area. Make sure you check the local laws when you plan your Alligator Hunts.
Important Safety Note: It is very important to know that there are vile bacteria growing in every gator\’s mouth. If you are just scratched during an alligator hunt, seek medical attention immediately to ward off infection.
Tips for Scouting During Alligator Hunts:
* Eye/Nostril Exposure. The inches between the alligator\’s eye and nose is a good estimate of the length in feet of the alligator. For example, if you have about 7 inches from the eye to the nose, you should have about a 7 foot alligator. A lot of alligator hunts are charged by the foot so this is handy information to know!
* Look for matted down grass or barren ground where the alligator has made a path.
* Look for claw prints or crawl marks on levees and banks. It is thrilling to come upon evidence of recent movement during alligator hunts!
* Typically alligators feed at night and early in the morning.
* Alligators are somewhat territorial and protective of their young. Your Alligator hunting guide may have some creative calling skills if the season is right at the time of your alligator hunt.
Harvest Techniques used for Alligator Hunts
(Check your state for approved harvesting methods)
Alligator Harpoons: Harpoons have been used as an effective method for attaching a restraining line to harvest an alligator. Harpoons or gigs consist of a penetrating tip such as a straightened fish hook, detachable dart, fish gig, or spear point attached to a restraining line. A float may be attached to the restraining line, but it must always be attended. The harpoon point is typically mounted on a pole, arrow shaft, or spear. Your Alligator guide will have the right kind of harpoon approved for alligator hunts in their area.
Alligator Snatch Hooks: Snatch hooks also have been used as an effective method for attaching a restraining line during alligator hunts. It is almost like alligator fishing! A snatch hook is a weighted treble hook attached to a restraining line that is hand-held or used in conjunction with a long, stout fishing rod and reel and heavy line. The hook is typically cast over the alligator or over the area where he last submerged. The hook is then retrieved until it contacts the alligator, at which point it is set with a strong pull. The line should be kept tight until the animal fatigues and can be approached; the hook often falls out if the line is allowed to go slack, so \”Eat Your Wheaties\” before these alligator hunts!
Alligator Snares: Wire snares attached to a restraining line loosely mounted (using a small rubber band or piece of tape) to the end of a pole are most commonly used to secure the alligator once it has been harpooned and brought under control near the boat. Alligator Snares must be hand-held or attached to a hand-held device and cannot be left unattended. The Alligator hunting guide will be knowledgeable about how to properly use a snare during alligator hunts.
Bang Sticks: The use of a bang stick may be permitted, but check with the local game and fish authorities for rules. Use any such device following the manufacturer\’s guidelines. Again, the alligator guide or outfitter will have everything needed for safe, fun and exciting alligator hunts.
After you have your alligator in the boat, now you can decide what you want to do with it! There are plenty of delicious recipes for the choice cuts of alligator – especially the tail. But if you don\’t plan to eat your alligator, your hunting guide may have contacts for the sale of the gator\’s hide and meat. Also, a mounted trophy gator may make the perfect addition to your trophy room as a treasured memento of your alligator hunt.
Alligator Hunts – Tipping your hunting outfitter or hunting guide: Even though alligator hunts can be quite expensive, be sure to set aside a 10% tip for your alligator hunting guide. These boys work very hard scouting year round and are eager to show you an exciting time during alligator hunts, so if you have a great time, let the guide know it by being a generous tipper.
