The Rules of Mens Suits
They say that first impressions last and you don\’t get a second chance to make one. If this is the truth then there is not better way to impress than with mens suits. These can be bought off the rack but there is nothing better that a tailored fit. If you are able to take the bespoke option then you will be able to have it cut exactly to your body shape. It will also allow you to choose the exact style and fabrics.
Many of the traditions of the modern mens suit come from England. Hong Kong is also well known for it\’s tailor but they would obviously have a lot of English influence. The dinner jacket for example was created for the Prince of Wales by and English tailor. This was originally required for black tie events, which where less formal that white tie.
Traditionally a dinner jacket has to conform to very specific design rules. Over the years these have been less rigidly followed but it is still useful to know the exact requirements. It has to be made from black or navy wool. The lapels are silk which is either satin or corded. There is only one fastening button and there are never meant to be vents or flaps on the pockets.
It is possible to wear a white dinner jacket but you should never wear one if you are a guest at an event. It is never the correct attire for colder climates but is sometimes acceptable for the host or hosts to wear white in order to distinguish themselves. For this reason it would never be appropriate for a guest.
No matter what style you choose there are always certain guidelines you should follow to look your best and also to adhere to conventions. The most important thing to remember with mens suits is to get the sleeve length right. First of all the shirt sleeve should be at the wrist and not longer or shorter. The jacket sleeve should then reveal no more than a quarter of an inch of the shirt sleeve.
Another important rule is that you should never do up all the buttons. If there are four buttons then never do up more than the top three. On a three buttoned jacket you can do up the middle button or the top two. If there are two buttons then only do up the top one. This creates a focal point in the middle of the jacket and is not just proper form but it has a slimming effect too.
Your belt should always match your shoes. If you are wearing trousers with belt loops then you should wear a belt. If you don\’t the belt loops just look untidy. It is also inappropriate to wear brown shoes with navy or grey. Brown shoes are traditionally considered out of town wear and are therefore never appropriate with business attire.
There are also a few guidelines that will help you to always get the right look. Striped ties almost never work with checked shirts. Socks can match any part of the outfit but they should definitely not stand out. The last and most common rule for mens suits is that your tie should always reach your waistband. The correct length here is critical.
