Zurich Switzerland
Zurich, Switzerland is set on the banks of a river and a lake. There also are the Swiss Alps in the distance. There are lots of clean cobblestone streets here and a lovely hilly terrain. You also can see many medieval church spires all around you. Zurich has its reputation as the center for international banking, and also for all sorts of chocolate making. However, it is a really modern city to visit, and there is an unhurried feeling of life here. If you want to experience the true Zurich, you should meander about and take your time as the natives do.
It is important to not litter in Zurich. This city has a Protestant past dating to the 16th century, and the city is immaculate. In fact, it is so clean here that you can fill your water bottle in Lake Zurich. It also is important to be polite in the city. It has a formal air, this city does. Most of the people who live here speak German, but you will find some people who speak English. You should carry a German phrasebook, though.
When it is time to eat, you will find Swiss food is heavily influenced by German kitchens. You will see a lot of meat, mushrooms, potatoes, and cream and butter. But you are starting to see more Italian and French dishes, as well.
Here are some fun things to do in Zurich, Switzerland:
Bahnhofstrasse
This is a high end shopping area that you need to take a stroll down. You will find tons of fancy shops, such as Tiffany, Prada, Cartier, fancy chocolate shops and expensive jewelry and watch stores. This is more of an area to just look and watch the crowds. Prices are very high here.
Old Town
This is the historic, medieval part of the city. You will find many cobblestone alleys, lots of nice museums, and more than 40 affordable motels. Also there are several nice Italian restaurants.
Opera House
This is on the edge of the lake and has many performances from September to July. The Zurich Opera House has more than 300 shows per year. You should get your tickets for ballets and operas well in advance.
Uetiliberg
This area is known for its natural beauty and is about 30 minutes from Zurich. It is at 2870 feet above sea level and takes about 10 minutes to walk here from the train station. You will see an amazing view of the city and the Alps. You also can find very nice restaurants, a playground and many trails on which you can hike. We also recommend the Uto Kulm restaurant, and this area is a nice place to visit right at sunset.
We hope that you will try to travel to Zurich, Switzerland, as there is more to do here than to just see all the international banks and chocolates that are made here and housed here. There is such an air of natural beauty in this Swiss city, it truly has to be experienced at least once in a lifetime.
