In the United States, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has stated that job prospects for dentists will be better than the average in other industries until the year 2018. So this is an excellent time to qualify as a dentist. However, different areas of dentistry are predicted to grow faster than others. For example, employment opportunities for prosthodontists will be better than general practitioners. This is another reason to consider specializing in a particular area of dentistry as the demand for specialists is growing fairly quickly.

Also, instead of looking for a job once you qualify you can decide to employ yourself and have your own dental practice. Self employed dentists make more than employed dentists. In 2009, employed dentists made an average $142,090 per annum.

For example, if you do not like working with people you can become a pathologist and study dental and oral diseases instead of treating people. If you like kids, you can become a paediatric dentist.
