Consider Dentistry as a Career

Dentists in the United States represented about 141,900 of employment. Most of these were general practitioners, orthodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons. If you would like to become a dentist, you should consider entering an area of specialization that is less popular amongst dentists in terms of career choices. This means that you would not have to compete for patients with many other dentists in your area. You will even be able to become an expert in your field if you are research oriented and innovative.

Basic Education and Qualifications:

There are special dental schools for students who want to be trained to be dentists. Make sure that if you are in the United States, you attend a dental school that has been accredited by the American Dental Association. There are 56 accredited dental schools in the United States. If you are not in the United States, you should contact your national dental association in order to find out which dental schools in your area are approved and accredited by the dental association.

Typically, before you can be accepted into dental school you have to have first completed two years of pre-dental education. Most people who go to dental school have already received a bachelor’s degree usually in pre-medicine.

Once you have successfully completed your training and qualified as a dentist, you will have to get a license in order to practice. In the United States, you will have to get a license to practice in the state in which you work. To qualify for the license, you will have to pass written and practical exams.

In order to qualify to be a specialist you will have to receive masters in dentistry.

There are nine areas of specialization in dentistry that you might want to consider. Below are descriptions of some of them.

Orthodontists:

These dentists specialize in straightening teeth using devices such as braces.

Paediatric Dentists:

These specialize in the treatment of children.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons:

These dentists are less focused on the teeth and gums as they are on the jaw and mouth in general.

Prosthodontists:

These specialists are trained in the area of replacing lost teeth using dentures, dental implants, crowns and bridges.

Oral Pathologists:

These specialize in the area of dental and oral diseases.

Periodontists:

They specialize in the gums and bones that support the teeth.

Public Health Dentists:

These work in communities in order to educate people on dental and oral health care.

Cosmetic Dentists:

These dentists specialize less on the dental and oral health and more on the aesthetic appearance of teeth. They do procedures such as teeth whitening and porcelain veneers.

Job Prospects:

In the United States, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has stated that job prospects for dentists will be better than the average in other industries until the year 2018. So this is an excellent time to qualify as a dentist. However, different areas of dentistry are predicted to grow faster than others. For example, employment opportunities for prosthodontists will be better than general practitioners. This is another reason to consider specializing in a particular area of dentistry as the demand for specialists is growing fairly quickly.

Also, instead of looking for a job once you qualify you can decide to employ yourself and have your own dental practice. Self employed dentists make more than employed dentists. In 2009, employed dentists made an average $142,090 per annum.

As is evidenced from the various specializations that are discussed above (and those that are not) it is clear that there is a type of dentist for every personal interest. For example, if you do not like working with people you can become a pathologist and study dental and oral diseases instead of treating people. If you like kids, you can become a paediatric dentist. So, there really is something for everyone in dentistry.
