Modern Easter and Its Tragic Insignificance

Easter is the second-most important Christian festival, right behind Christmas. The purpose of the festival has traditionally been to explore certain deep concepts of Christianity and human existence. In fact, all four parts of the festival- Lent, Eucharist, Crucifixion, and Resurrection- have their own purposes, which are mentioned below:

– The purpose of Lent is to cultivate your will through self-denial

– The purpose of Eucharist is to share love among others through a memorial object

– The purpose of Crucifixion is to teach affirmation of life through defeat, sacrifice, and forgiveness

– The purpose of Resurrection is to learn about recovery and returning what was lost before

All the above lessons are found in other religions as well, but there are only a few that teach all of them in a single event. The modern Easter celebration, unfortunately, is devoid of all of these lessons. Today, Easter celebrations have only one purpose- eating Easter egg chocolates.

This iconic Christian festival has been losing its significance rapidly over the past few years, and its current form is just an excuse for people to buy confectionaries. It comes as no surprise that people who know or have experienced this festival in its entirety feel dejected at its current state and, consequently, at commercialization itself.

The loss of significance of this festival is the result of several factors, and one of them is competition. It must be noted that it is not just competition for money that has resulted in the current state of Easter, but also competition for your time, attention, devotion, and admiration. Commercialization may have played a significant role, but it is not the only thing to be blamed. The truth is that most people had begun to lose their faith in the festival even before commercialization appeared. The loss in faith, in turn, led to a loss in interest in the festival and its themes.

Many people feel that the best way to take care of the general disinterest toward real Easter lies in strengthening government control over commercialization. However, a better solution lies in what many people consider the root problem itself, which is commercialization. By ‘revamping’ commercialization, it is possible to convince and get the attention of those who lost interest long back.

For those who have their doubts over the effectiveness of this method, remember that commercialization is only possible through mutual consent. You can use the features of commercialization to ‘market’ the festival to people who have lost their interest. Marketing the religion should not stop at just modifying the church; it should also include making themes more flexible and relevant to the current generation.

Commercialization of religion or religious functions is not a new concept. It has been around for centuries, and the Church has practiced it as well. A good example of this is Baroque architecture, which was used extensively by the Vatican on its churches when the style of architecture was popular. Churches and cathedrals built on this form of architecture piqued the interest of people and ignited interest in Catholicism and Christianity in general.

Irrespective of your feelings toward it, the fact is that commercialism is a powerful tool that has been used by the Church before. If Easter is to be revived to its past glory, this tool should be used once again.
