Everything That You Need to Know About the Kurti
Kurti, or Kurta as it is commonly known, is a traditional piece of clothing that is worn in India as well as in some countries in Asia. It is a loose shirt, mostly made of a light cloth that falls below the knees and can used for casual and formal wear. Worn by both men and women, the kurti is paired with loose and light pajamas, narrow-ankled salwars, tight-fitting churidars, rectangular cloth dhotis, and even with jeans.
Kurti is a shortened version for kurta. The term “kurta” is a Persian word which is literally translated as “a collarless shirt.” This term was derived sometime during the twentieth century and was first used by the English. Commonly worn by males, this is one item of clothing that represents fashion, tradition, and culture and is very rampant as causal and formal wear in the majority of Arab countries.
As women’s wear, the kurti is worn as a blouse and is therefore much shorter in length than the traditional one. They are made of light materials to allow free and easy movement and are paired with jeans for casual use. The use of jeans also makes it durable for rough use.
The traditional kurti is made up of rectangular shaped pieces of fabric and is sewn in a way that no fabric gets thrown away and is wasted. It is mostly made as simple as possible but there are those that are heavily decorated and are meant to be worn for a particular purpose or event.
Their loose and long sleeves fall directly to the wrist and do not narrow. Staying true to the simple design of the Kurti, the sleeves are just hemmed and no cuffs are attached. To allow the wearer to freely move about without any difficulties, the side seams have 6- to 12-inche slits above the hem. They are commonly constructed in a way that they open in the front and are held up with buttons.
While the Kurti traditionally have bare and hemmed necks and does not feature any collars; the modern designs of today already have stand-up collars that are known as Mandarin collars. Other types of collars that are already slowly being incorporated in the Kurti are those styles that are used in the designs of achkans, sherwanis, and Nehru jackets.
The material that makes a Kurti is highly determined by the current season and weather. The summer season and warm-weathered days call for a Kurti that is made of cotton and thin silk. For the cold winter months, those that are made of wool or Khadi silk (a thick and coarse silk that is hand spun and hand woven) are the ones that are best used.
To give them a more festive feel, a Kurti may be decorated with the use of a wide array of methods. In this modern day, a number of decorating methods have been added to the traditional ones. Still, the traditional embroidered decoration remains to be the most popular style to ornament the Kurti.
