3 Main Diseases Caused by Bloodborne Pathogens
Microorganisms that thrive in the human blood are known as bloodborne pathogens. These bloodborne pathogens can be transmitted from one person to another by exposure to infected blood. There are three main bloodborne diseases that are seen. These are explained below.
– HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus): Most of the time HIV infection results in a dangerous disease known as AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) as it affects the immune system of the human body. As the immune system is compromised there is high risk for the person to contract all kinds of other infections. If the person has reached an advanced stage of the disease even a common cold can become fatal. The most common routes of spread of HIV are accidental needle pricks and infected blood splashing on the mouth, eyes or an open wound.
– Hepatitis B:Hepatitis B has affected around one-third of the population of the world. The first organ to be infected here is the liver. Symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, body aches, dehydration, itchy skin, fever, yellow coloration of eyes and skin and jaundice are seen in this disease. As the disease progresses scarring of the liver may occur, this is known as Cirrhosis. Hepatitis B infected people may also develop liver cancer in the later stages. Hepatitis B can be contracted by sexual contact with an infected person.
– Hepatitis C: Hepatitis C is basically liver infection. It results in liver cancer as the liver stops functioning. Hepatitis C does not present with any symptoms and therefore can go undetected and untreated for many years. The primary route of transmission is sexual contact and contact with infected blood. Contact with infected blood can take place by accidental splash of blood to the mouth, eyes or open wounds and by accidental needle pricks.
Bloodborne pathogens are highly dangerous and fatal. Until the past decade there were around 200 reported deaths and over 9000 infection cases seen in the United States alone. The main reason for this was the inappropriate handling of blood and other body fluids. Bloodborne pathogen training is available everywhere now to reduce the number of workplace accidents that may lead to transmission of bloodborne diseases.
The best way that you can prevent spread and contraction of bloodborne pathogens is by having the necessary knowledge. The first step to protect yourself is awareness of how bloodborne pathogens are spread in the workplace and also in other everyday situations. Bloodorne pathogen training should be given to everyone starting with students in school.
Always remember you must never be directly exposed to blood. Any blood may be potentially infected. If you are required to deal with blood, use gloves and protective clothing.
There are numerous training courses available on the internet which explain the universal precautions to be taken to curb the spread of bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne pathogens are even now a huge threat to the society. They are responsible for countless deaths. Therefore it is only our duty to do our best to curb the spread of these pathogens by practicing the universal precaution techniques.
